Although our ?~arne means "taste care of ~aaaia", our activities pond irtterests ~e not geographity limited. Among other interests, we support preservation of significant sates (both historical and ecological) and parks developnxent. It is for these reasons tl'at we are subneittang testiraaot~y in support of Resolute°~ 149-01. The "dvhereases" of the resolution itself make a very good case for why we should support Congresswoman ]v€ink's 11906. In addition, we tivould like to poirnt out several other reasons why we believe the Hawai 'i County Council sh®uld pass this resolution: L One of the biggest toau'ist attractions onr island offers is ~dawai 'i Volcanoes National P~.rk The economic spinaffs from the park being a large infflux of isacoane into our island ecanomy. tAn e3rpanded Pu`uhontla O I~onaunau will do much the satr~c, and our local. economy needs all flee help it can pct. 2. The areas to be acquired have been o#~ lirr?its to members of the public, being on private property. With acquisitioe~, students, historians, maoli and other inte~sted Pers®ns would now be able to ~e and learn. 3. The County of I~awai 'i has becta struggling for many years with the nerds for more parks infrastructtu~, the unachieved levels of service, and the prohibitive c®sts of developing new parks facilities. :ff the federal governnnent acquires the g45 ages, vve • t~ fop f~, Wit. . would l~.ave more parkland without any County expenditupe of our lirni~;d funds. °fhis is a 1®t of"big for the buck"'! 4. `the ccaltupal d natural resources of the addi4ional adage ape unique snd ippeptaceable.
