I am writing to urge the l~awaii County Council to adopt Resolution No. 149-O1 in support of
Congresswoffian Patsy Mink's bill H.R 1906, which authorizes the expansion of Pu'uhonua O Honaunau
National Park by up to 805 acres
This proposed expansion of Pu'uhonua O flonaunau National Park is of utmost importance. These lauds
that surround the present park have lain relatively yeaitouched since ancient tinges, and the presence of flee
ancient 1-lawaiian culture is evidenced by the iHiultitude of features and sifts both above ground and below.
The ]iaaeal and cultural desa~ndents of these lands hold thegn in deep reverence, as does the South Kona
comanunity.
For the 400,000+ visitors that explore the park yearly, this experience is oRen the only true glimpse that
they get of the historical a¢ad spiritual essence of the Hawaiian culture.
The proposed purchase would expand the park by 805 acres and would provide a very necessary beaiter
from development for the entire park area, assuring a natural view plane and sense of place so iffipoi~at
to protect a park with such worldwide significance and ancient historical importance.
Another factor oil favor of the purchase of 805 acres is the pristine AA cguality of flee near-shore
environment along the Honaunau coastline. Percolation of pollutants, human waste and sedimentation
fihrough the permeable lava fields as a ireajor threat to the marine environment wherever development
tapes place. As raQnpant development threatens the e€itire ~?'est 1-lawaii coastline, it is itnportant to focus
ore preserving such currently pristine and culturally significant places as Honaunau,
Please help support the overvahelining majority - up to 90®/o by recent polls - who are calling for the
preservation of Hawaii's special places. The U.S. Legislature stands ready to approve flee purchase of these
potential parklands, seed your stateriient of support, in Elie form of a resolution, will help to make this a
