I am writing to urge the Hawaii County Council to adopt Resolution N®. 149-01 in support
of C®ngresswornan Patsy fink's bill H.R. 1906, which authorizes the expansion of
Pu'uh®nua 0 Honaunau National Park by up to 905 acres.
fihis proposed expansion of pu'uh®nua 0 H®naunau National Park is of utmost imporfiance.
These lands that Burr®und the present park have lain relatively untouched since ancient
tinter, and the presence of the ancient Hawaiian culture is evidenced by the rnt~ltitude or
features and sites both ab®ve gr®und and bel®w. The lineal and cultural descendents of
these lands h®Id them in deep reverence, as d®es the S®uth Kona community.
F®r the 400,000+ visit®rs that expl®re the park yearly, this experience is often the only
true glimpse that they get of the hist®rical and spiritual essence of the Hawaiian
culture.
fibs proposed purchase w®uld expand the park by 905 acres and would provide a very
necessary buffer from development f®r the entire park area, assuring a r~aturai view
plane and sense of place so Important to protect a park with such worldwide
significance and ancient historical importance.
Another' factor In favor of the purchase of 605 acres is the pristine quality of the
near®shore envir®nment aI®r~g the Wonaunau coastline. Percolati®n of pollutants, human
waste ar~d sedimel~tati~n hr®~~h the perrr~eable lava f'selda is a maj®r threat to the
marine environment wherever' development takes place. As rampant development
threatens the entire ~o0est Hawaii coastline, it is important to f®cus on preserving such
currently pristine and ca~Iturally significant places as Honaunau.
Please help support the overwhelming majority - up to 906 by recent polls -who are
cafli~g for the preservati®~ of Hawaii°s special places. The U.S. ~.egislature stands ready
to approve the purchase of these potential parklands, and y®ur statement of support, in
the fora of a rtsoluti®rt, will help to make this a reality. °I'hank y®u.
