Dear Chairman Arakaki and Council Members: •
It is with regret that I request to withdraw my nomination of Ms. Janice Mahuna to e Ha~r,i
County Board of Appeals.
My staff has recently discovered an existing conflict of interest with the Board of Appeals and
Ms. Mahuna. At this time, Ms. Mahuna has an active case pending before the Board of
Appeals.
The application for boards and commissions asks for pre disclosure of any existing or potential
conflicts of interest and this active case was not disclosed on her application.
To avoid the existing conflict of interest and any future potential conflicts of interest, which may
arise; through Ms. Mahuna's business in real estate, I hereby withdraw my nomination of
Ms. Mahuna to the Hawaii County Board of Appeals.
I do realize that Ms. Mahuna is a conscientious individual with much to offer the people of
Hawaii County. I would like to consider Ms. Mahuna for other boards or commissions where
there would be no conflict of interest.
I will shortly be submitting another nominee to fill the vacancy on the Board of Appeals.
Please accept my humble apology for any inconvenience that this may have caused.
