Leningrad I;larionoff, Chairman
Congniittee on Public V~Iorks & Intergovernmental Relation
Dear Sir:
As an environmentalist, Iwant to stress zny support for the passage of F:csolution
155 O1, Protecting this environment is a deep concern for any citizen and, not lcastly
the U.S. Governzxaent. `I`o permit these installations in worldwide avacer$ 1:; clearly in
violation of the ~ndaaagered Species Act of which the Navy should not be Exempted.
ile cruel and disastrous results of h.FAS were witnessed in 1998 itt testing cuff the
I Iawuiian Islands. ~Uhales were driven to a state of abnormal conduct which sharply
reduced its population by 50%. Similarly, tests in the Bahamas resulted in the death of
whales, which incidentally was iaxeluded in segrraent of "60 Minutes II'.
'T`here is no secand chance to preserve either the environment or the speG:ies
dependent upon it once it is destroyed. Its preservation requires vigilance b;~ alI of us
anti sliouid be accepted as a sacred trust, Safeguarding the legacy eve wish to leave to
future generations beconxes an epnpey undertaking if we do not, firstly, ensure that the
ecology so vital to existence is maintained.
Sincerely,
~arbzra 13irdscy
