I aan writang to request that your coarlanittee pass Resolution 155-0], an opposition to tlae
U.S. Navy's deployaYaent of their Low Frequency Active sonar program.
This is not just another case of 66tree-hugging envaronanentalists standing in the path of
progress."
Ps~3gapsies performed on whales that died grad beached in the Atlantic showed
heanorrhages an their inner ears. This as evidence of fatal acoustic damage caused by low-
frequeaacy sonar. These whales were killed by the kind of equipment the Navy wishes to
deploy ara our waters.
As we all are aware, the whales that frequent the ocean around l°Iawaii are not just
irgtportant members of the anarine ecosystem, and a source of pleasure to all. of us who
watch for them each year--they are also an iraapoa~8ant tourist attractioaa. And at this bane
of economic oasis, the Last thing we should do is to damage yet another sector of the
state's fragile econamY-
