My Hartle is Barbara I-Ianog and I would like to speak in favor of Resolution No 160-02, which
supports good faith baa•baining between Hale Anuenue administration and It_WII representatives
to reach a good resolution of contract negotiations.
1 am the newly elected president of the Pepeekeo ILWU Pensioner Club; made up of I00
members who participate in the County's senior citizen program and ILWU pensioner programs
I am also president of the 1400-member RSVP, which provides senior volunteers to many .
programs throughout the Rig Island
A1] of the members in the pensioner club and RSVP are senior citizens like ruts. [ artt 68 years oid,
but many of our members are older than me, some as old as 90. We are all concerned shout the
possibility of one day !raving to trtove into along-teen case fa.cilit_y. Aside from the huge cost, our
big concertr is the quality of care we will .receive.
The nurse's aides at J€ale A.nuenue do provide the kind of quality care we need. In fact, a few of
ourLLWL1 pensioner club members have been residenes at Hale Anuenue and one is still there. In
our golden years, we don't want to be worried about who will take care of us and what kind of
care we will be given At 1-lale Anucnue, I think we can feel.confident that we will receive good
care.
Rut now we hear the workers are not being treated fairly by matragement. With the union, they
have been ne~,~atiatinb for 1 U months but still have no agreement. Although better pay and
benefits is a concern for the worker;, they are also concerned about working conditions and how
they are treated. I think managernctrt should realize th~it ttre workers are the ones who make their
business successful and should treat them fairly.
One day, I may need to become a resident of !-Isle Artuenue. If that day comes, 1 want to be sure
that the people who are providing me care ati•e paid well and treated with dignity arrd respect. if
they are not, their morale will be low and I'm afraid ytrality of resident care will suffer.
For the sake of the residents ol'Hale Attuemre, please adopt Resolution 160-02 to help the
workers of Ike Anuenue win a fair couu-act so they can continue to provide bond, quality care.
