S'CATlG1ddENT OF TOM. POY (;~r~'s~' ~~`~€tf ° c,
. ItEGr~~DI1~G ~SOGL'TION NO. 160-02
My name is Tom Poy, and I am the president of the ILWiI 1rlawaii Division Pensioner Council.
«'e have 10 pensioner clubs in the council, located in Naalehu, Paltala, Puna, Hilo, Papaikou,
Pepeekeo, Honornu, Laupahoehoe, Paauilo and I~onokaa. I am also the president of the
Laupahoehoe II.WU Pensioner Club and Senior Citizen Program, which has 100 members.
I arxi very concerned about ILVVl.1 negotiations with I-}ale Anuenue. For the past 10 months, the
union has been trying without success to reach an agreement with Hale Anuettue. In the
trreantime, the workers at Dale Anuenue are feeling t'rustrated and concerned that they have vetY
little protection on the job. `That's not a good atmosphere in which to vt•ork.
A union agreement doesn't take away anything from management, but just helps to make things
fair for the workers. 1vlanagEment can still discipline workers, but. only with just cause.
Management can still reward food erttployees, but not at the expense of'others. Management can
still schedule work, hire and fire, and manage the operatioras, but not irr an arbitrary manner. In
short, a union contract will make things fair for everyone and create a work enviroaiment that
boosts morale and enhances productivity.
I hope you will agree and adopt .Resolution 160-02 to encourage Hale Anuenue and the ILWU to
resolve their differences and negotiate a fair cw~tract sooty. Thank you for listertino to my
testimony.
