BUYERS Chairman August 30, 2001 The Honorable James Y. Arakaki Councilman County of Hawaii 25 Aupuni St. Hilo, HI 96720 Dear Jimmy: Yesterday I returned from a board meeting in Chicago for the second largest nut company in the Nation. When I reviewed my pile of mail, I found the enclosed letter from Chris Yuen. Therefore I hastened to attend this meeting of the Planning Committee and made a short presentation on assisted living. I had no time to prepare and hopefully it went okay, but they are not visionaries, as it may take 10 years to fully develop this new industry for our senior citizens. It will also create a lot of local jobs and help a lot of our friends in their senior years. As you can see from Chris Yuen's letter, he is not going to submit any changes for the County General Plan, but fortunately he acknowledged that the final power resides with the County Council whom I know understands the need to help our senior citizens have a wellness life in their retirement years. I am so grateful for your support and I have also received wonderful letters of support from Julie Jacobsen and Gary Safarik. I also had a call from Dominic Yagong, who understands the need to help the Hilo/Hamakua Coast. I believe we have the Mayor on our side, so let's make the change in zoning as conveyed in my letter to the Planning Director. If we don't do it now, we'll have to wait 10 years before another General Plan for the County of Hawaii can be approved. I do believe the County Council will appreciate the vision and understand the powerful demographics, which require beginning the process. I have a lot to learn about how to proceed, but 1 fully understand the need of our senior citizens. Thank you so much for your help and support and I believe our next move should be to go see the Mayor. Needless to say, I am so grateful for your dynamic support. Best personal regards, J.W.A.
