Dear Councilmember Jacobson-
I am a member of the Maui County Council who introduced a similar resolution
to yours which was passed unanimously by our County Council last year.
The passage of this resolution was prior to the most recent disclosure that
the LFA Sonar has been proven to have devastating and deadly impacts on
cetaceans and other living creatures.
If you would like to have a copy of this resolution signed by our Council,
please just call my office in the morning at 808-270-5512 and contact my
assistant Kathy Kaohu who was instrumental in drafting and doing the
research on the measure.
In any event, please use this e-mail testimony in support of your resolution
and know that :-with the findings now being admitted by the military, it is
even more compelling to support your position on banning the use of this
killer testing in Hawaii's waters and especially when our ocean is viewed as
a marine sanctuary. Please know that you have our Council's resolution as
evidence of our deep concern for our ocean resources and for the creatures
which frequent it - including us humans.
I car. only imagine what would happen if an accident were to occur which
caused death or disability cf a resident or visitor while this testing was
being conducted. The economic impacts would further degrade our fragile
tourism base amend could irreparably damage our image as a "safe" place to
visit.
