To: Honorable Mayor Harry Kim
County of Hawaii
From: Dominic Yagong, Member ~
Hawaii County Council '
Subject: Hilo Landfill Closure
As the chairman of the Environmental Management and Parks Committee, I'm extremely
concerned about the direction of the newly appointed Commission. I'm extremely happy
with their enthusiasm in trying to take on so many issues at this early stage. However,
I'm concerned that the focus may be so widespread that the most important issue facing
our County may not be getting the focus it needs. The issue I'm talking about is the
closure of the Hilo Landfill and the solution to the closure.
At the next Environmental Management Committee meeting on January 23`a I will share
my view that I believe the Commission should be focused entirely on the Hilo Landfill
closure. You have expressed that this is your number one priority, and I want you to
know that I agree with you. I'm not sure how you feel about aone-issue focus for the
Commission, and I would like to hear from you. If you agree that this issue needs the
Commission's entire focus, I would like to request that you express this view at the
hearing on January 23`a
In speaking with Dixie Kaetsu, she asked me to write a short letter regarding this issue. I
would appreciate a response at your earliest convenience. It is my hope that the
Administration, County Council, and general public can work together and be on the
same page on this very important issue.
Thank you very much and I look forward to your response.
