The f,~ffice of the Pro§ecuting Attorney is in strong support of the establi5hanent
of a Dnzg C®uz~t is~'k~wazi County to provide an alternative program for non-violent
drug dependent defendants.
Various studies conducted by the Department of l~iealth and ®ther organizations
have identified a large number of citizesis addicted to drugs. The lucrative Hailers of the
dneg Made, shifting communuty values and the addi.etive nature of drugs have rseated
havoc in our community. The creation o¢ a Drug Court on the Big Island of#~s one
promising practice in an az°ray ®f initiatives to meet our drug problem.
The office of the Prosecuting Attorney has been a member, along with the
Judiciary, Public Defender's office, service providers, and others in a Drug Cotart
pl~.r~raang Learn. The planning Learn has been able to work on procedural and policy
issues that will lead to a successful Drug Court prograan.

Court program.
