Aloha Mr. Galen Kuba,
I was dismayed when I recently learned that Rainbow Recycling
monthly pick up service was discontinued due, primarily, to a cut in
necessary recycling fiscal year diversion funds, because of the
County's budget shortage.
Just in the three weeks since the service has been cancelled, we have
had to purchase a second trash barrel for our trash. For 7 years,
we've been able to put out just one trash barrel for pick-up every
other week. And we recycled everything we could which was picked
up monthly. That kept an awful lot out of the landfill.
It is my understanding that for every ton kept out of the landfill, it
saves us taxpayers $40. There needs to be a growth in recycling; why
doesn't it make sense to save that money by continuing and increasing
recycling so that there will be more dollars for other programs?
Please use your influence and encourage recycling, reducing and
reusing by setting up better and better programs, instead of stopping
them. There is much work to do in waste management for our County
and I hope you'll support recycling in every way you can. Then we
can reduce our trash pick-up to one barrel every other week, as
before. And also, feel good that our new landfill won't be filled before
we die.
