Enclosed are summary charts from the latest survey on recycling activities in the 96778
Zip Code area — Pahoa, Hawaiian Beaches, Hawaiian Shores, Nanawale, Seaview,
Kehena, Kapoho.
Major concerns for the Pahoa Community Recycling Project which made up the survey,
are pickup and use of cardboard from Pahoa businesses, and safe disposal of motor oil.
The survey shows that people are participating in recycling, even though the system still
encourages wholesale dumping and the only sites for hazardous waste disposal are Hilo
and the soon-to-be built recycling/reuse station in Kea'au.
Recycle Hawai'i Hawai'i is to be commended for holding motor oil pickup days at least
Big Island transfer stations, but the population in Puna subdivisions and Pahoa town -
32,000 and growing - that's not enough.
The cost of a truck and trailer to transport unsorted waste to a landfill is almost half a
million dollars. Wouldn't our money be better spent on diversion? A different paradigm.
Equipment we could buy for that amount — to use at neighborhood recycling centers:
Carboard shredders $8,000 ea
Tub grinders for compost $50,000 ea
Conveyor and bagger for compost $20,000 ea
Trailers to transport machinery $15,000 ea
Recovery fee for motor oil collection 3.5 cents per quart (County pays private vendors)
