FROM Panasonic PPF MAY. 7.1997 10:30GM,`P 1
Fred C. Holschuh, A'I.D.
_ r..~--~~
i'_ ~
"y717HY 7 x'1"110 3t1
DAT)?: May 7, 1997 COl Jn\~
COUNTY~U~: HAWAII
TO: Honorable James Arakaki, Chair, Hawaii County Council
and Members of the Council
FROM; Fred C. Holschuh, M.D.
SUBJECT: Fruit irradiation facility
Chair Arakaki and Members of the Council,
I azn very concerned that the Council may be moving too rapidly towards a decision to
bttild the fruit irradiation facility, and thereby bypassing prudent safety issues regarding
the health of our environment and out people. I have not seen the proposal, nor am I
expert on nuclear facilities, but I do know that in Hawaii we have prided ourselves on the
health of people and this facility may pose health risks. Anew pharmaceutical agent is
put through years of testing before it is released for use on people. It seems to me that we
may be bypassing similar safety standards in a rush to approve this project.
I fully understand the great need Hawaii County has to do anything possible to boost our
economic well being. We must be very sure, however, that this enthusiasm does not put
the health of our residents and visitors at risk from nucleaz accidents.
I respectfully request that the bill regarding the fruit irradiation facility be held until such
time as good science supports its safety.
R
e(s
'
p'
e
~c
t
-f
^u
-
l l y,
Q ~
Fred C.
