FOR
A DOCTORATE IN HAWAIIAN AND INDIGENOUS LANGUAGE AND CULTURE
REVITALI~ATBON
AT THE ~.~NBVERSITY OF HAWAIjiI AT HILO
Aloha members of the Hawaiyi County Council. My name is Dr. William H. Wilson. I am a
member the faculty of Ka #~aka jiUl~~ O Kejielikt~lani College of Hawaiian Language at the
University of Hawaiyi at Hilo. I ~haish to ~abmit testimony in support of the resolution that you are
considersr~~g regarding an expression of support for our planned doctoral program and graduate
level bridge programs.
Our University of Hawaiyi at Hilo is word renown for its work in revitalizing the Hawaiian
language. Because of our strengths in this area we have been encouraged by the University
system and others around the world to develop a doctorate program that will serve both the
interests ~f the Hawaiian language and all the indigenous languages of the world. We have now
developed such a proposal wish strong involvement of Dr. Suzanne Romaine of Oxford who has
been coming to Hilo for several years now to study our efforts. It wiBl be the first doctorate in
anything ~lawaiian;,the first doctorate in <ndigenous language and culture revitalization in the
United Stages, and the first doctorate at the University of Hawaiyi at Hilo.
The proposal is now in university comra~<ttees and has received recognition from President
Dobelle of the University. Our Hawaiian>Language College very much appreciate the effort of
Council members in developing a resol?.~tion in support of our proposed doctorate and are hopeful
that the Council will be able to pass the resolution. Such a resolution will be useful in mot;~ing the
proposal through the various committees and funding sources.
regret that I will not be able to appear before you in person today. We have had unexpected
visitors from an American Indian education program in Wisconsin.
