Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Resolution No. 179-02, transmitted by Mayor
Harry Kim per Communication No. 529, dated February 15, 2002, regarding the naming of streets
in the County of Hawaii, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 179-02 authorizes the approval of the street name for the roadway in North and
South Kohala, Hawaii.
The Planning Commission at its January 18, 2002 meeting approved the name for the roadway in
Exhibit "A" as follows:
"Kohala Mountain Road" - named after the historic reference to the road on
Tax Maps
Pursuant to Section 22-35, Article 2, Chapter 22 of the Hawaii County Code, the Council is
authorized to adopt street names for Hai}jai `i County's unnamed roadways.
When Committee Member Curtis Tyler suggested that the name should be a Hawaiian name, Your
Chair along with Committee Member Leningrad Elarionoff mentioned that as long as they can
remember, this road has always been known as such, and to try and change the name now would
not be proper.
Your Committee did not entertain further discussion on this measure.
Your Committee on Planning concurs with the intent and purpose of Resolution No. 179-02, and
recommends its adoption.
