Re: ~U®GET -Milo Municipal Golf Course
The following information is provided in answer to your questions in follow-up to the
departmental budget hearings, and your letter dated March 21, 2002.
1. How did we obtain the lands for the golf course (Executive Order, etc.)?
The golf course is situated on lands set aside for county use by State Executive
Order. The county owns the parcel of land where the driving range is located.
2. If this state land or ceded lands?
As far as we can determine, they are state lands and not ceded lands.
3. Are we able to sell the golf course or are there any stipulations on how we
use the land?
Frond past experience, it would seem that the state would grant permission for
the land to be leased from the county to another entity as long as it is used for
the same purpose. We would not be able to sell the property outright.
4. What would be the rate increase (golf fees) to make the Hilo Municipal Golf
Course self-sufficient?
Attached are work sheets showing two possible rate increase proposals. This
was also submitted in response to your memo requesting information on the
impact of a 7.7% budget reduction. There are other ways possible to assess
and increase fees to eliminate General Fund subsidy to the Hilo Municipal
Golf Course which can be explored.
