Your Committee on Parks ~ Environmental Management, to which was referred Communication
No. 543, and attached Bill No. 189, reports as follows:
The purpose of Bill No. 189 is to amend the Parks & Recreational Facility Schedule, Chapter 15,
Section 15-68, ~-Iawai `i County Code 1983 (1995 Edition), relating to naming the Waiakea-Uka
Gym located at VVaiakea-Uka Park to "Stanley Costales, Sr. Waiakea-Uka Gym" in honer of
Stanley Costales, Sr.
Communication No. 543 is from James Y. Arakaki, Council Chair, dated March 5, 2002,
transmitting Bill No. 189 for the Council's review and consideration. Mr. Arakaki informed the
Committee that this bill was generated through the strong support of the community for the
renaming of the gym to honor Mr. Costales. Mr. Arakaki informed the Committee that
Mr. Costales was employed at the gym and contributed his time to those who utilized the facility.
Council Member Aaron Chung informed the Committee that Mr. Costales gave countless hours of
his time to athletic programs in the communities which included Little League, Senior League, and
St. Joseph School girls softball. Mr. Chung stated for the record that the request for the renaming of
the gym did not conic from the family but from the members of the community.
Your Committee is in accord with the purpose and intent of Bill No. 189, and recommends that it
pass first reading.
