Aloha County Council Members, This letter is in strong support for the continued funding oi: the Hamakua Health Center van. T'he Hamakua Health Genres is an active partner with the schools of medicir~, social work, nursing, psychology, dental hygiene, medical technology, and public health at the University of Hawaii as part of the Quentin N. Burdick Interdisciplinary Training Rural Health Community Capacity Building Program. As a rural health education and training site, it provides a valuable interdisciplinary training and community capacity building opportunities for students that have a strong interest in eventually providing professional service to rural communities such as Honokaa. The van is essential in providing transportation to pal'ients and staff that have difficulty accessing medical care and social service on their own. It has also provided transportation to projects and programs that engage our professional student team in community building activities that are unique to the k~onokaa culture. Again, we hope that the continued funding of the Harnalcua Health Center van receives your strongest support. As you are aware, there is a great lack of public transportation on the Big island and there is not a day that passes without the .need for the transportation services provided by the Hatnakua Health Center. Not only do we use it to bring patients from their homes to the Health Center, but also to transport patients to other doctor visits, which the patient was referred to in Waimea, ]Hilo or icons. Often as providers of medical care, we are frustrated with attempting to coordinate caxe and transportation issues and for many of flee elderly who, can not drive any longer. The burden falls on family who can not afford to take a day off work because of their awn faanily needs.
