SEXUAL ASSAULT VICTIM EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM
Timeline of service initiation
October 1, 2001
Starr Up: Hilo YWCA SAVE Office opens at 197 Kinoole Street with 1 full time
experienced Crisis Intervention Coordinator and 2 on-call Crisis Workers, plus
administrative support.
All calls to the 24 hour sex assault helpline are answered continuously islandwide with no
break in service between the previous provider and the YWCA. Services include face to
face contact with victim, police and nurse examiner during police investigation of all
reported sex assaults, as provided in the Hawaii County Sex Assault Protocol.
October 4, 2001 -YWCA SAVE staff provide sex assault victim sensitivity and interviewing
training to Hawaii County police recruit class.
October 15, 2001 -Full time Therapist/Educatorvith previous sex assault services experience
joins the Hilo office.
October 22, 2001 - Kona's new SAVE Crisis Intervention Coordinator and 3 new Crisis Workers
begin their orientation and training at the Hawaii County Sexual Assault Response Team/Sex
Assault Nurse Examiners Institute, with HCPD detectives and SANEs.
October 26, 2001 -Kona and Hilo staff open the West Hawaii SAVE office in Kailua at 75-5759
Kuakini Highway Suite 103D.
November-December, 2001 -Additional Crisis Workers are hired and oriented to duty.
January 7, 2002 - A full time Therapist/Educatorvith lots of previous sex assault services
experience joins the Kona office.
January-February, 2002 -Hired and oriented additional on-call Crisis Workers to complete the
team. Services continue in full force islandwide including crisis phone contact, face to face
counseling and community prevention education.
