STREET NAMING POLICY OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII The following is the policy which shall be used in the naming of roadways within the County of Hawaii: Dedicable or County owned streets 1. All names shall be Hawaiian (grammatically correct). Exceptions may be made for non-Hawaiian names of long-standing and common local usage, provided that the history behind the naming can be given. Preference shall be given to names of places, persons or events historically or traditionally associated with the ahupua'a in which the street principally lies. 2. The Hawaiian names selected shall: a. Have appropriate meanings which shall be confirmed by any of _ the below referenced sources: Pukui, Mary Kawena and Elbert, Samuel H. - °°Hawaiian Dictionary" 1971 University of Hawaii Press or any future revision Andrews, Lorrin - °'A Dictionary of the Hawaiian Language" 197 reprint of the 1865 revision Pukui, Mary Kawena and Elbert, Samuel H. - 00Place Names of and Mookini, Esther T. Oe spelled, including glottals and macrons, in conformance with the system now utilized by the Department of Education and the University of Hawaii. Should a name, spelling and/or meaning be in question, the Hawaiian language faculty in the Hawaiian Studies Discipline of the University of Hawaii, Hilo College shall be consulted. c. Not be duplicated within the County; d. Bear no similarity to any existing names within the County; e. 8e words not exceeding 10 letters. 3. Pequests of names within subdivisions granted tentative approval with County dedicatee roads, will be considered and placed on a reserve file. Names shall be adopted by the County Council pursuant to Section 2~=35 of the Diawaii County Code after the roads have be dedicated and acc~e t by the County. 4. any extension of an existing street shall carry the same name as the existing street. Notices are to be circulated to all property owners, and where applicable, to tenants in any proposal to change the name of an existing street. 6'. -In the naming of streets, the "Nomenclature" hereto attached, shall be used. 7. Non=dedicabee streets 1. Naming of private roadways shall be considered only upon substantial compliance with the following minimum requirements: a. Comply with roadway requirements as stipulated in Section 23=4® through 23=53, ~iawaii County Code; or roadway with a minimum width of 20 feet with ~ainimum pavement width of 16 feet. b. Purchase and .installation of signs to be borne by the applicant. c. ~Nritten consent from owner or owners of the roadway. 2.
