Mayor Marry Kim
I~lilo HI 96720
Dear Mr. Kim,
Thank you for nominating me to serve on the Hawaii County
Planning Commission. I am honored to be invited to serve, and I
would take the responsibility to serve the people of the Sig Island
very seriously.
I have been working since the nomination to learn as much
about the duties of the commission as I can. I have gained a
tremendous respect for the volunteers who devote hundreds, if not
thousands, of hours to this mission. In my research I found that the
number of days required on a monthly basis to fulfill the
responsibilities is far more that I originally understood. Although my
employer is fully supportive of my participation, I find that I could not
fulfill my responsibilities to my youth and adult clientele, calendared
several months in advance, and at the same time fulfill my
responsibilities to the commission, which must address site visits and
contested cases in addition to the regularly scheduled meetings. I
would always have to choose one commitment over another, and this
would not be fair to the clientele or the County.
I deeply regret that I must decline the nomination at this time,
and I apologize for the inconvenience I have caused by this late
decision. I sincerely hope I will again have the opportunity to serve
when I have fewer conflicting responsibilities.
Sincerely,
Deborah J. Ward
