Please hold public hearing In West Hawaii on Resolution~~~~
71 In support of a food irradition facility in Hawaii County
and Bill 62 which appropriates X2,000,000 towards such
Industry.
The people of West Hawall want a say on this proposed
appropriation for an extraordinarily controversial protect.
We want to speak to and learn more about;
- why this is a good or bad project on which to spend
X2,000,000 of taxpayers money,
- whether among competing needs for funds (especially in
light of the expected consequentes of the Supreme Court's
privitizatlon decision) this is the best allocation of
$2,000,000,
- why public funds should or should not be spent to support
a private nulear Irradiation facility,
- the pros ar~d cons of the economic studies that have been
done to justify this enormous expenditure,
- the favorable and unfavorable experiences in Hawaii ar~d
other parts of the country pertaining to health, safety, and
economic viability,
- the potential jeopardy food irradiation exposes all Hawaii
foods to as this island becomes knows around the world as
the home of nuclear irradiated food,
- the issue o4 consumer acceptance of irradiated food,
- the pros and cons of county liability for problems created
br the irradiation facility,
- the procedure for dealing with nuclear waste,
- potential environmental hazards,
- and more,
This is a protect of grave significance that should
under no Circumstances be rushed Into without deep
deliberation. Prudence dictates study, investigation, and
