Dear Mr. Arakaki,
I have lived in Holualoa, Hawaii for over 25 years and grew up on Oahu. I
am way too familiar with Hawaii's politics and all of the unfairness that
goes along with it. I can no longer sit back and watch West Hawaii pay for
the excesses of East Hawaii. I am sorry that a once bustling city no longer
can carry its own weight, but that is not the fault of those of us in West
Hawaii.
I have seen no improvements in all of the years I have lived here in the way
of parks, roads, safety measures. Most improvements (road widening, traffic
lights, etc.) have been paid for by developers. The basic idea has been:
Sell out West Hawaii, say yes to most all development whether wanted or not
by local citizens, get the developer to pay for improvements, collect more
tax revenue as a result of out of control growth, and spend it on East
Hawaii. Don't think. for one minute that all of us do not believe this just
because of our apathy. I can tell you though that for many, this is the
last straw if you so unfairly increase property taxes. If there must be an
increase, than get it from East Hawaii properties where the money will
primarily be spent.
