Dear Mr. James and Mr. Brauher:
I have received your letter dated May 25, 2002, regarding the upkeep of the Hawaiian Acres
side of the Puna Emergency Access Road.
The County is looking forward to working together with your community on the maintenance
issues of this road. An earlier letter from Mr. Brauher indicated that the community
association was meeting to discuss a partnership with the County, and that a proposal would
be drafted and submitted to the County for consideration. We would still appreciate receiving
a proposal from you that we can use as a basis for discussion to clarify what the County's
respe~sibility will be so that we are all in agreement on this issue.
Meanwhile, I am referring your letter to Dennis Lee, the Director of Public Works. Until we
have a chance to mutually agree on the extent of the County's maintenance responsibility, Mr.
Lee will be your contact for road maintenance requests. He can be reached at 961-8324.
Thank you for your letter, and I look forward to working with both of your organizations on
the maintenance issues of the Puna Emergency Access Road.

Re: Upkeep of the Puna Emergency Access Road
Dear Mayor Kim,
We, the representatives of Hawaiian Acres, would like to take this opportunity to extend
our sincere appreciation to your Administration and the County Council for the
willingness to take responsibility for the Puna Emergency Access Road, as stated in the
May 15`h article of the Hawaii Tribune-Herald.
In order for us to move forward for the benefit of both communities, we look forward to
communicating with your Public Works representatives regarding the upkeep on the Puna
Emergency Access Road. Please inform us on whom we need to contact for repair of road
decay and shoulder maintenance.
We all applaud your step forward on taking control of this needed emergency ingress and
egress for the lower Puna area.
