...Please support Mayor Kim and Planning ®~rector, Chris Yuen's. recommendation to
amend the County General Plan to place the shoreline at Kohanaiki into the Open Space desig-
nation. As a member of the community that uses this area for surfing, fishing and camping., I
support the efforts to protect Kohanaiki from the impacts ~f exclusive /resort development
along the coast for the following reasons:
1. This area is rich in native Hawaiian cultural sites including village areas, sacred/
ceremonial areas, anchialine ponds, wetlands and trails as well as habitat for endan-
gered plants, birds and reef fish.
2. The land is adjacent to the Kaloko Honokohau National Park and -portion of it has
been designated to be within the Congressionally Authorized Park ooundaries.
3. The local community as well as visitors enjoy the beach and coastal area as a prime
surfing, fishing, day use and camping spot.
4. The Kohanaiki 'Ghana, Na Keiki He'e Nalu and the Kona community have demon-
strated commitment to stewardship of the natural and cultural resources for over 11
years, providing bathrooms and trash pick u~ . beach clean ups, trail and pond resto-
ration projects.

Kohanaiki is at a critical crossroads. The Kohanaiki `Ghana and the Kona community have been
working for over 11 years to protect the coastal lands at Kohanaiki from the impacts of exclusive /resort
development. We have worked to~e~, Cher to care for and protect this land for community access and use
NOW is the time to make your voice heard! Mayor, Harry Kim, Planning Director, Chris Yuen and
the staff at the Planning Department have proposed an amendment to the County General Plan that would
create an OPEN SPACE setback for the coastline at Kohanaiki. This amendment provides a unique opportu-
nity to secure needed protection for this intact coastal area for future generations.
Please take a few minutes to voice your support for the Planning Department's recommended amend-
ment. Express your support for the OPEN SPACE designation at Kohanaiki. Let our decision makers know
that Kona community families and friends enjoy and need Kohanaiki for sustenance, recreation and tradi-
tional cultural use and have been caring stewards of the area for generations. Help protect Kohaniki for
surfing, camping, fishing and gathering.
Your letter will help to remove the threat of resort development on adjacent Kaloko-Honokohau
National Park and it will help t® protect our near shore resources, Native Hawaiian cultural practices and
Kona life-style. Mahalo for taking the time to send a letter of support for the amendment to create open
