Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Communication No. 612, transmitted by Mayor Harry
Kim dated April 29, 2002, reports as follows:
Communication No. 6l 2 recommends the appointment of the following individual to the Hawaii County
Water Board (formerly known as the Water Commission) to serve a term ending on December 31, 2006:
Mr. George A. Wilkins, a Democrat from Council District 8, has lived in Hawaii for over 33 years.
He will be filling the vacated seat of Yuki Takeya, whose term expired on December 31, 2001.
He served as Chair of Governor Burns' task force that wrote "Hawaii and the Sea", and also
served on Governor Ariyoshi's Marine Advisory Council, and the University of Hawaii's
SEAGRANT Research Advisory Council.
Pursuant to Section 8-2, Hawaii County Charter, the mayor shall appoint members to the Water Board to
be confirmed by the Council.
Your Committee noted that the correct spelling of his name is Wilkins not Wilkens, as originally
submitted.
Several committee members acknowledged Mr. Wilkins far his impressive work with the University of
Hawaii, and thanked him for his willingness to serve on the Water Board.
Your Chair stated that it will not be necessary for Mr. Wilkins to appear at the Council meeting on June 5,
2002 when his appointment is confirmed by the Council.
Your Committee did not entertain further discussion on the appointment of Mr. Wilkins to the Water
Board.
Your Committee on Planning recommends the approval of the appointment of Mr. George A. Wilkins to
the Hawaii County Water Board.
