Your Committee on Public Works and Intergovernmental Relations, to which was referred
Communication No. 614, reports as follows:
Communication No. 614, dated April 30, 2002, is from Mayor Harry Kim, submitting the appointment of
Mr. Robert M. Kawakone to serve on the Hawaii County Transportation Commission. According to
Communication No. 614, Mr. Kawakone is a life long resident of Hawaii and a retired sales manager for
the Hawaii Medical Service Association. He is the current president of the Waiakea Lions Club, past
president of the Exchange Club, a former member of the Lehua Jaycees and a member of the Democratic
Party. If confirmed, Mr. Kawakone will fill the Council District 2 vacancy and serve until December 31,
2004.
During the meeting, both Mr. Wendell Hatada, Executive Assistant, Office of the Mayor, and
Mr. Kawakone answered Committee Members' questions regarding the nomination. Mr. Kawakone
shared with members that he accepted the nomination to the Commission because it was an opportunity
for him to give back to his community. Mr. Hatada assured the Committee Members that all ne~v
Commissioners would receive training and information on procedural matters from the Office of the
Corporation Counsel that would include operation under the Sunshine Law. Members of the Committee
also expressed their gratitude to Mr. Kawakone for his willingness to serve on the Commission.
Your Committee on Public Works and Intergovernmental Relations recommends the approval of the
appointment of Mr. Robert Kawakone to the Hawaii County Transportation Commission.
