Your Committee on Public Works and Intergovernmental Relations, to which was referred
Communication No. 459 reports as follows:
Communication No. 459, dated December 18, 2001, is from Mayor Harry Kim requesting that Mr. Peter
Hoffman be re-appointed to serve on the Hawaii County Transportation Commission. According to
Communication No. 459, during his tenure on the Commission, which expired on December 31, 2001,
Mr. Hoffman demonstrated integrity, diligence and competence. He is a five-year resident of Hawaii and
not affiliated with any political party. Communication No. 459 further explains that the Hawaii County
Charter provides for Mr. Hoffman to succeed himself on this Commission. if confirmed, he will serve
until December 31, 2006.
During Committee discussion, Wendell Hatada, Executive Assistant, Office of the Mayor, answered
Committee members' questions regarding the Hawaii County Charter, Section 13-4 (c), applicability to
this nomination. He also informed members that after this nomination there still remains three vacancies
on this Commission. [n addition, it was noted that a communication from Mr. Hatada dated January 7,
2002, forewarning Committee members that the nominee would not be present at the Committee meeting
was received and circulated.
Your Committee favorably reviewed Mr. Peter Hoffman's first nomination to this same commission in
August 2001. Committee Report No. 17 adopted by the Council on August 15, 2001 described
Mr. Hoffman as a retired army colonel and who previously served as Chief of Mission Support for the
Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
Your Committee on Public Works and Intergovernmental Relations recommends the approval of the
re-appointment of Mr. Peter S. Hoffman to the Hawaii County Transportation Commission.
