I strongtly support the nomination of F3arbara~ell as County of Hawai' i Director of
Environm:~ntal. ~~anagen~ent. I have worked with IJarbara on a community recycling
project in Pahoa, asbserved hey- tireless e~°orts to set up ~sllection paints for hazardous
substances and seen the v~aark she has done in schools to educate the children. of the dig
Island in the art of recycling to preserve resources for future generations.
Barbara has been an excellent and able advisor to "Opals Enterprises," the community
group v~hich has begun a recycli~ag project funded by the EPA and sponsored by the
County of iS~avrai' i.
Her broad knovdledge of all types of waste dasposal methods and her ability to analyze
recovery system data will serve the County well in its ei~orts to implement its plans for
reduction, reuse and recycling. She has assisted the. County of I~awai'i and many
community groups to implement programs to reduce the amount of solid z~;aste and
ha~,ardous substances goia~g into County landl~lls. ~'he work she has done for Recycle
~Ia~rai' i is vaell known throughout the County of I~Iawai' i.
