The new
General Plan is much unproved over the old Plan: an extraordinary effort went into
making that happen.
PLAN TO PF20T~CT fully supports protection of our coastal areas by pla~ng the
proposed land into CONS~rVATION and OPEN as in the current version of t#~e Genera4
Plan. Otherwise, projects built too close to the shore could bring an array of foreign
materials allow run-off of soil, fertilizer, pesticides, and herbicides into our fragile
shoreline and reef ecosystems: a most valuable resource.
PLAN TO PROTECT fully supports the long-overdue classification of Agricultural Land in
the Kona Coffee Selt as "Important°°.
PLAN TO PROT,~CT looks fo~ard to the development of Regional Plans, with lots of
public input and more specifiers on transportation, recreation, and needed infrastructure.
This new General Plan provides that regional Plans wilB be adopted by ordinance, giving
the Regional Plans the ford of law. This is vital to the work which community people will
put into creating those regional Plans and want their work to count.
PLAN TO PROTECT and many kanaka maoli, continue to recommend a 100-sere
buffer zone designated with either the current "Open or Conservation zoning', to be
mauka of the Keakealaniwahine Complex to protect it forever. 10lOe would be equally
happy #o acquire this land in connection with the Lako Street extension. il'Je must find
some way to protect what may be the most important historic site in the State.
VIOe did not get everything that we asked for in this draft General Plan, however, PLAN
TO PROTECT endorses the General Plan in it's current form, and encourages the
County Councsl to adopt this plan without delay.
Yours,
~ ~ Y .
President °~Ty1t~'', I~1a3e„a,,,~
File 1`d~s.,~

_ .
