East Hawaii Physical Activity Coaliton projects target support to the community to enhance <br /> physical activity opportunities. <br /> Findings through formal and informal surveys: <br /> • Many communities lack facilities, transportation & programs to properly service the <br /> population at hand. <br /> • Lack of Instructor trainer programs to empower our communities. ~ ~;~t~~~ <br /> i_ <br /> ~tanty C®un~41 / fa <br /> } ~ <br /> Short term: <br /> • Building collaborative community partnerships: (Tie our community resources together <br /> to support programs and give opportunity to enhance our communities.) <br /> • Support funds for trainings and help provide awide-range of training opportunites to <br /> empower individual communties: <br /> <br /> • "Train-a-trainer" approaches for more sustainable programs in communities. <br /> • Offer transportation opportunites to already existing programs; <br /> and after school sports bus, transportation to county Parks and Recreation events: <br /> <br /> example: Track, Novice Swim etc. <br /> Long term: <br /> • Address the need for additional pools in the Puna district that is ON "the beaten path" to <br /> service the majority of citizens. <br /> For example: The population well exceeds the need having over 31,000 residents and growing. <br /> Puna proved to be the largest growing community in the state, as result of the last census. <br /> Comparing Puna to Kona and Hilo; Kona with 37,000 people which has access to numerous <br /> beaches and two centrally located community pools. Hilo aquatic's supports: 3 pools, beach <br /> <br /> access, plus community access to private and agency pools such as, the YWCA and Yacht <br /> Club. <br /> • A pool located in the Mountain View, Kurtistown, or Kea'au Shipman Park area should <br /> be a priority vision of this council. <br /> In closing, the county should consider with Kamehameha schools and the Kea'au district school <br /> complex the vision of holding National events a futuristic possiblitiy, enhancing the health of our <br /> people and bring economic capabilities by building and properly maintaining facilities. <br /> Suggestion: the county could study the YWCA's salt water system installed far future cost <br /> effective practices. <br /> Installing the salt water system cost run approximately $1,000 annually as apposed to monthly. <br /> ~3 <br /> ;~a. - <br /> r'f, To: <br /> ~ <br /> <br />
