Mess~l~e~ to b~ ~~~c~ ~~o~lo~y ~~r~~r°~l ~I~n M~~~ii~~
J~!i~~ :~0, from ~~~sy Mo~r~ iao
I have just returned from two weeks on the mainland. When friends ask me what the best part of my trip
was, 1 respond , "No question! Coming home!" I was so happy to return to this beautiful island I live in
where people of many ethnic backgrounds smile at their neighbors and speak in kind and gentle voices.
Contrast this to the rushed and unfriendly people on the mainland.
What I saw almost everywhere I went on the mainland was a mad dash for cash and flash. Almost all
the shopping centers and communities look alike. 'The cost of living in many cities has priced the
average family out of hopes of ever owning a home when starter homes begin at $450,000 as they do in
many parts of California. 6 lanes of traffic at 75 miles an hour rumble constantly through both suburbs
and agricultural valleys day and night with noise, air, and visual pollution.
This could happen here as it has in Oahu, and is starting in parts of Maui, but 1 want something different,
something better.
To do this we need to stop the rampant development of our beautiful and precious coastline for the
wealthy who can afford to pay half a million dollars for a so-called 5 acre "ag" lot. We need to develop
and encourage small businesses and jobs that will pay a decent wage and keep us happy and living at
home here in Hawaii. I fully support the efforts of the Mayor, the County Council and the County
Planning Director in recommending coastal areas for the public and not for the developers.
We have a chance here to do something original and meaningful. Let's make this island different and
better! Let's have more parks, coastline access, and good camping and day facilities for the residents
and public. This is what everybody wants. I and the many people I speak for want to keep Kona
country. Let's work together to make our vision of a good life with peace, quiet, coastal access, and job
opportunities a reality for all of us on our island. Thank you.
Betsy Morrigan
Registered Voter
87-3187 Honu Moe Road
Captain Cook, HI 96704
328-8911

gokayak@kona. net
Vim, Nao ~
~iJe No.
Rsf. ~`o• ~
Ref. rate ~ 5 ,~p02
