~ Iii ,
Dear Ms. Leithead-Todd,
I'm a 17 year old native of Kona and a recent graduate of Konawaena High, While
reading todays newspaper, I found your address, under a letter to the editor, concerning
Kohanaiki a.k.a. Pine Trees. You, being the chair of the council Planning Committee, we put our
trust in you and the rest of the board to do what's best for our island and our natural resources.
Working in a local retail store, I'm surrounded by tourists all day long. Day after day, I'm
complimented on our beautiful Kona coast and island as a whole. Many of these visitors make
frequent trips to Hawaii. I always ask them if they're going to visit any other of the islands
before their return home. The answer? Usually no. Many of them having visited Oahu, and
Maui, settle for the Big Island because it represents what a dream Hawaiian vacation should be.
Rugged coastlines, natural tropical settings, and beaches that are left to promote their own beauty
without a resort or condominium gagging it. Some tell me that if they wanted. to see a city
(referring to O'ahaz~_they'd rather have stayed: hams and spent-their -n€~ney vl~wher~: The Big
Isle is special. Are we going to allow much of the Kona and South Kohala coast to become more
over developed than it already has? Don't get n~ wrong- I like Maui and Oahu, they're nice
islands, but where else can you find an active volcano, a snow covered mountain, and beaches
that are so remote that it tabs a hike or a 4-wheel drive vehicle to trek it, all within one days
adventure? I understand that some development is inevitable and perhaps needed, but please
recognize the importance and impact that your decisions will FOREVER have on this island and
the generations to come.
Thank you,
Bridget Kaleki Butler ~ ; ~_a ~..a n
- ~ij

cc: West Hawaii Taday
~ .
-
Cort9vr~.
