Box 172 , ~ Honaunau, HI 96726
i j
Chair Planning Committee Bobby Jean Leithead-Todd and Members of the Council
Subject: Support for Kohanaiki Open Space Designation
Dear Chair Planning Committee Bobby Jean Leithead-Todd and Members of the Council:
I atn a long-time resident of Hawaii, and personally desire and support our comcnuniry to
continue having regularly accesses this area for fishing, surfing, and camping and to continue
their longstanding stewardship of this awesomely beautiful community resource.
Exclusive resort development must not be allowed to impact our coastline. Kohanaiki Must be
protected for its native Hawaiian cultural sites, sacred ceremonial sites, village areas, wetlands,
ponds and trails.
Also, the area must be protected because it is a habitat for endagered species of plants, birds and
reef fish.
This land is next to the Kaloko Honokohau National Park, and I understand that a portion of it
has been designated to be within the Congressionally Authorized Park boundaries.
My family and friends, as well as those we invite from the mainland, Asia and Europe come here
to enjoy the beach, surfing, fishing and camping the Kohanaiki area.
I have witnessed the coinYnitinent to the stewardship of this very special area by the Kohanaiki
'Oharia, Na Keiki He'e Nalu and the Kona cominuniry for many years, keeping the beach clean,

restoring the ponds and trails and removing trash.
Mahalo for considering my vote for Open Space along the coast at Kohanaiki and Yny full
support of Bill #163.

Please designate Kohanaiki as open space and guarantee of access to our coastline for our future
generations.
Comm.
