I oppose Bill 52 v°°~?=ia° " not only as a concerned resident of Hawaii county and avid
environmentalist, but as an environmental scientist and licensed professional geologist concerned
about the }iealth and safety of all Hawaii residents. As a trained a~ qualified professional with
over 15 years of experience in the environmental azena, 1 have provided gmlogie consulting and
environmrntal services to many federal and state agencres, and private businesses.
The operation and maintenance of as irradiation facility on the island of Hawaii poses serious
environmental concerns over the contairunent and control of hazardous substances and radioactive
nufer~ r-/Swestes Accidental releases during the transport, storage, and disposal of hazardous substances
and coaa.riaared uses pose a th.-~t ;o human health and the emironmcnt and would incur
e~peasive cleanup costs for all responsible patties. For a project of this eomplexiry and possible
consequence m our island environment, the engineering desgn, health and safety plan, and waste
matragcment plan must be carefully scrutinized by quahfred engineering, environmental, and
medical professionals.
The projected economic gains associated with such agribusiness venrures should not simply be
allowed rn out weigh the potential risk of environmental degradation and threat to human health.
As responsible citizens of Hawaii, it's our duty to secure healthy living conditions and protect our
