Enclosed is a bill for an ordinance adding the Waianuenue Avenue Sidewalk project for
$50,000 to the Capital Budget. °fhis project, initiated from a request from the Hilo Medical
Center, involves the construction of a sidewalk along Waianuenue Avenue across from the
center.

A. REQUEST:
By ordinance, appropriate $50,000.00 in funds for Construction of
Waianuenue Avenue Sidewalk.

This money will be used to construct a sidewalk along Waianuenue Avenue
across from the Hilo Medical Center. Currently, the employees of the
medical center walk along the side of the road to get from the parking
lot to the crosswalk that crosses Waianuenue near the hospital. Because
of an embankment on the side of the road, the pedestrians are forced to
walk close to the traffic lanes. Construction of the sidewalk addresses
public concern.
Because Waianuenue Avenue is a well-trafficked road with somewhat narrow
lanes and shoulders, and because there is a large number of people who
walk along side of the road, construction of a sidewalk seems to be a
prudent expenditure.
The Hilo Medical Center initiated this request for a sidewalk. The
length of sidewalk needed is about 325 feet.
