RE: Request for Open and Conservation from Kawaihae to Pololu Valley
To Whom This May Concern:
In April, 2001 we, along with OHA strongly supported Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 146
SD1 Urging the retention and preservation of Open Space and View Planes, Historic Sites, and
Traditional access along the coastline of the North Kohala District, Hawaii.
Some areas of immediate concern that is protected by this resolution and not part of the State
Historic Preservation inventory are the following:
1). Keawe nui Bay and Keawe'ula Bay in the Kehena 2nd Ahupua'a a cluster of historic
enclosures and heiau where na ali'i would wait prior to disembarking for journeys to
Tahiti and beyond.
2). Kaiholena Ahupua'a which has more historic sites than Lapakahi State Park.
3). I-Iapu'u Bay to Kapanaia Bay where lies Hale `O Kaili, a heiau built specifically for
Kamehameha the Great's personal war god, Kuka'ilimoku; the oldest heiau on the
coast inclusive of the Kapalama Heiau located also in this area.
4). Kapanaia Bay to Keokea Bay is noted for its "very" ancient graves and also lies the presence
of Kuapalaha'a Heiau. ;v~g.~ `

RE: Request for Open and Conservation from Kawaihae to Pololu Valley
We are very concerned about the future land use in Kohala and want to be sure that the Hawaii
County Council's Committee on Planning will help to protect our valuable agricultural land and
lifestyle, recognize and protect our historic resources and sites, preserve our traditional access to
our coastline and mountains, and protect Kohala from encroaching and inappropriate
development.
Several other community groups along with long established family owned businesses in Kohala
have shared like concerns with us to the Senate and House of Representatives of the Twenty-
First Legislature of Hawaii and we now request your support of establishing the increase of Open
and Conservation areas to include the areas I have listed here in this letter.
In protection of our historic sites and ancestors of the native Hawaiian, we ask your decisions be
in respect our concerns expressed.
