February 20, 2002 4 ~r~t~v~u To: Members of the Hawaii County Council RE: Redesignate the North Kohala Coastline to conservation and open Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, We the Kohala Community have spent over thirty years writing and speaking to the different departments and people of the County and State of Hawaii, asking for legislation to protect and preserve the North Kohala Coastline from Kawaihae to Polulu Valley-makai of Akoni Pule highway. The people of the County of Hawaii still come to the Kohala Coast with their families to fish and camp. They come from everywhere - Hamakua, Hilo, Puna, Ka'u and Kona - to enjoy the undeveloped Kohala Coast. The Kohala Coast provides the longest unobstructed coastal view plane in the State of I-Iawaii. It is also home to the most continuous groups of ancient pre-contact sites still in existence. We ask that you please review the documents that we submit today, including the November 10, 2001, resolution from the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, a federation of forty-seven civic clubs. We need the strength and wisdom of your office to protect the North Kohala Coastline for future generations by designating it conservation and open. The current general plan state, "The cost of restoring or regaining natural beauty is greater than the cost of protecting it".
