The National Association of Counties (NACo) and the Bureau of Land Management
(BLM) are pleased to present to you the enclosed Invasive Weeds Toolkit entitled
"Explosion in Slow 11r~~tioz}}~'~ ~Z '

As you are well aware, invasive species present a serious problem in many parts of the
country both on public and private lands. The BLM estimates nearly 4,600 acres of
Federal lands alone are lost each day to weed infestation. Millions of dollars are spent
each year by state, local and federal governments and private citizens to combat this
problem. Money spent on prevention is a wise investment, and key to prevention are
awareness and education. Invasives are not confined by geographic borders and do not
adhere to jurisdictional boundaries. Therefore, we must work diligently to fight this
threat on federal, local state and private fronts. This Invasive Weeds Toolkit, "Explosion
in Slow Motion," is a first step in the "war on weeds."
The kit contains materials for adult as well as youth audiences including a video, poster,
fact sheet, weed identification book, bookmarks, and additional information. BLM
managers, Environmental Education Coordinators, Interpretation Program Leads, State
Weed Coordinators and County Officials can use the toolkit to build local weed
information and education programs. Within each toolkit is an information sheet that
describes how to order additional materials which should prove useful as counties plan
invasive plant outreach programs.
Once again, we believe you will find this toolkit a useful product to begin to manage
invasives on state, local, private and federal fronts. If you have any questions or

We are happy to send you this toolkit, "Explosion in Slow Motion," developed by the Bureau of
Land Management (BLM) in cooperation with the National Association of Counties (NACo) and
other partners, to assist with education and outreach activities concerning invasive species.
We have sent this toolkit to members of NACo's Public Lands Steering Committee and Western
Interstate Region. (See enclosed letter.) However, we recognize invasive species present a
problem nationwide. Please retain this resource for information purposes to assist the counties
you serve.
