Please support l~Iayor Kurs and Planning I~srector, Chris 3~uen's recon~ndation
to anscasd the County General Plan to place the shoreline at Koha~saiki into the Gpen Space
designation. ~s a srsesnber of the comrasunity that uses this area for surfi~ag, fishing, sd
camping, I support the efforts to protect Kohanaiki from the inspects of exclusive resort
development along the coast for the following reasons:
1) This area. is rich in native I-Iawaiian cultural sites including village areas, sacred
cerensonial areas, anchi~:line ponds, wetlands seed trails as well as habitat for endangered
plants, birds, and reef fssh.
2) 'The land is adjacent to Kaloko-~®nokohau Natiors~' Park and a portion of it has bin
designated to be within the Congressionally Autlsosized boundaries.
3)The local cornniunity as well as visitors enjoy the beach and the coastal area as a prime
surfing, fishing, day use and camping spot.
~3) The Kohanaiki ®hana , Na Keiki I~e'e Naiu and the Kona Conuysunity have
dgnsonstrated conssxsitts~sent to stewardship of the natural and the cultural resources for
over 11 yews, providing bathrooms and trash pick-up, beach clean-ups, frail and pond
restoration projects.
Thatslc you for considering a positive vote for ®pen Space along the coast at Kohanaiki
and for supporting bill # 163 .
