Hopkins RE: $75,000 Bond required of Isomedix I contacted NRC and spoke to Ms. Beth Prange regarding the $75,000. She fax me the NRC's rules (see attachment). The $75,000 is the required amount of financial assurance for decommissioning an irradiation facility. For cobalt 60, it is $75,000 (see pages 30-12 and 30-26). According to her the amount reflects the cost of removing the cobalt 60 pencils from the facility and shipping them back to the supplier. I left a message to Mr. Dietz requesting him to respond to your question. I hope he will send us his response by Monday. Diane and I met with Mr. Harry Kim yesterday (May 16) to listen to his concern on this project. He told us that he will show up on Tuesday to give a presentation on the safety of the facility. Depending on how he articulates his presentation, he could sound like he is against irradiation. I am sending you and the rest of the council members a copy of the NRC rules and regulations on Licenses and radiation safety and requirements for irradiators as well as information on transport of cobalt 60. I am sure I included these documents in the big red folder which I sent to each one of you, but this saves you the trouble of finding them. I will be out of town during the hearing. However, Diane will be around. You can direct your needs to her. ~~~n a;~.~. w~. ~ _ xo.
