Phone# Phon6x�t _�o3Cj Fax— Fax 4 As horneowners in the Kona Vistas subdivision, we have grave concerns about a variety of illegal activities occurring at the termination of Lako Street in our subdivision. We brought these concerns to the Traffic Safety Committee at its recent meeting on January 23. It was suggested that you could help by allowing installation of temporary cement barricades across two road stubs that will eventually be extensions of Kinau and Lako Streets. During the time we have lived here, these road stubs have been providing an all -too -convenient parking place for people from outside the neighborhood to commit various crimes and nuisances. The following activities have been occurring there during broad daylight, but predominantly at night: Drug dealing Public urination Littering and dumping of household garbage and yard debris Loitering (including sleeping in cars overnight) Loud parties, particularly by underage drinkers Graffiti on rocks, public signs, light poles, and public utilities in and near the intersection Smoking marijuana Theft of neighborhood pets Theft of and damage to stop signs, "No Parking" and "No Littering" signs Illegal fireworks which have. caused at least one brush fire adjacent to homes We call the police to intervene when we observe these problems, but are frequently told by the police dispatcher' that no one is available to respond because the on -duty police are already occupied by higher -priority situations in the community. We definitely need more police coverage in Kona, but even that would be an incomplete solution to our problem, because the police can't be in our neighborhood 24 hours a day while these problems continue to occur. For safety reasons, residents have been discouraged by members of our police force from confronting the people who are causing the problems. Therefore, we have little recourse in solving these problems except through the traffic commission, and now, hopefully, through your office. We request that the powers of your office direct the county to erect cement barricades to block the two road stubs at this termination of Lako Street so that people cannot pull off the street and park there. There used to be "No Parking" signs posted around the top of this intersection, but they have been stolen or painted over. This intersection has already been designated by the COMM. Therefore, we see no reason why these road stubs should not be barricaded until Gamrex (the developer) is ready to build Phasc 2 of Kona Vistas. Those of us signing this letter are homeowners who were able to attend the last Traffic Safety Committee meeting. However, dozens of other Kona Vistas households are affected by these circumstances, and we write to you on behalf of all. Thank you for your attention to our concerns and your efforts in helping us solve this on-going problem in our neighborhood.
