Re: Proposed Amendments to the land use pattern allodation guide map
in the County of Hawaii General Plan.
Specifically North Kona: The area bounded by the land of Honalo on the North
and the lands of Honuaino on the South and bounded on the fast by the old
West Hawaii Railroad bed (approx 700 ft elavation) and on the West by the sea.
As an affected landowner within this area, we object to the classification of this
land as intensive agriculture. The present and historic use is grazing. Detailed
Land Classification Maps, Land Study Sureau, University of Hawaii 1965 and
soil survey conducted by USDA Soil Conservation Service 1973, document
this area as either D or ~ land. Productivity is limited by low rainfall and stony
nature, much of it pahoehoe with little soil cover.
In ancient times it encompassed part of the Kona Pield System, but I believe
that system functioned there only during favorable climatic episodes and was,
at best, a sustenance agriculture.
