Re: Request for sign Variance for St. Joseph High School
Dear Chairman Elarianoff,
Aloha, and thank you for the wonderful job that you and your constituents are doing
as the County Council. As principal of St. Joseph High School, here in Hilo, I
humbly ask for your support in the following matter.
Mr. Gerard Callo, alumni, parent, and longtime supporter of St. Joseph have
generously offered to provide our school with a sign, which has been long overdue.
He would like to airbrush a sign which states, "H®me of the Cardinals" on our school
gym at the corner of I~api'olani and Hualalai streets. The sign itself will he facing
the Hualalai Street. A sketch of the sign is enclosed.
I have checked with the Planning Department and am informed that our school is
zoned R.D. 3.75 ("double family residential"). Section 3-26, Hawaii County code,
states: Upon reading Chapter 3 of the Hawaii County Code I understand that pursuant
to Division 3, Permissible Signs, Section 3-26 states:
Secti®n 3-26. residential districts.
(a) The following types of signs shall be permitted in all classes of residential
districts: /yam

Or indirectly lighted, not exceeding six square feet In area,
relating to a business conducted on the premises. (emphasis
added.)
The sign that IVIr. Gallo would like to install is larger than the required area.
Therefore, I aan requesting a sign variance from the requirements of the ]E~Iawaii
County Code. I kindly request your committee to have this matter placed upon the
next agenda,
both 1VIr. Gallo and I are looking forward to meeting with you and answering any
questions you or your committee inay have.
I thank you for your tune and look forward to your expeditious response. In the
meantime, should you have any questions, you are welcome to call me at

Very truly yours,
