Arakaki and Members of the County Council County of Hawaii Hilo, HI 96720 Dear Chairman Arakaki and Council Members: It is my pleasure to inform you that I have appointed the following individuals to the Hawaii County Bicycle/Pedestrian Safety Committee. • Mr. James Friday is a 12-year resident of Hawaii and is a forester with the University of Hawaii. He commutes to work on his bicycle and is an avid sport rider. Mr. 1=riday is a member of the Hilo United Methodist Church and the Boy Scouts of America. He states that he is not affiliated with any political party. • Mr. Kelly Burke is a 40-year resident of Hawaii and holds a Ph.D. in Management Information Systems. He is currently employed by the University of Hawaii. He also is a life-long cyclist for recreation and exercise. Mr. Burke is a volunteer mediator in Hilo and has served on neighborhood boards on Oahu. He states that he is not affiliated with any political party. • Mr. Richard A. Chamberlin is a six-year resident of Hawaii and holds a Ph.D. in physics. He currently is employed by the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory as the Technical Manager. He is an experienced bicycle rider who is interested in improving and promoting alternatives to motorized transportation. Mr. Chamberlin is a member of the Hawaii Cycling Club. Arakaki and Members of the County Council Page 2 September 11, 2002 • Gerain Hollins is a 27-year resident of Hawaii and is the owner of Mid-Pacific Wheels, which is a local bicycle shop. He desires to have input on strategies that could enable and encourage the increased use of bicycles and footpaths on this island. Mr. Hollins is also a member of the Hilo Y's Men. He states that he is not affiliated with any political party. • John M. Luchau is a 20-year resident of Hawaii and is aself-employed boat/home builder. Mr. Luchau believes that the county needs visionary planning and a safety program. He has been active in his community of Paradise Park. He has served as president, board member, and co-chair of the Community Action Committee and the Road Committee. Mr. Luchau states that he is a member of the Republican Party. • Ronald Reilly is a 31-year resident of Hawaii and currently is a Medical technician with Clinical Labs of Hawaii. He has a broad background in bicycle and pedestrian education and safety issues. He believes that there is an ongoing need in facilitating bicycle use. Mr. Reilly is a member of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Organization, the Volcano Arts Center, Hawaii Bicycling League, People's Advocacy for firails Hawaii and the Volcano Festival Chorus. He also serves on the Highway Safety Committee. Mr. Reilly states that he is not affiliated with any political party. • Mary L. Osborne is a six-year resident of Hawaii and is a Senior Accountant with Shell Management Hawaii, Inc. She is committed to help the Island of Hawaii adopt a comprehensive bicycle/pedestrian plan to improve the roadways and make cycling and walking accessible and safe as a viable means of transportation and recreation. She also serves as the president of the Hawaii Cycling Club. Ms. Osborne states that she is not affiliated with any political party. • Herbert Soloway is an 11-year resident of Hawaii and is currently retired. Mr. Soloway would like to "give back" to the community in serving on a board or commission. He has been active in the community by serving on the Board of Directors, and as past treasurer of the Waikoloa Village Association. He also serves as vice president of the Waikoloa Village Outdoor Circle. Mr. Soloway also serves as tax counsel with the AARP. He states that he is not affiliated with any political party. Irvine is a life-long resident of Hawaii and is currently employed by the Hilo Bike Hub. She is an active member of the Women's Mountain Bike and Tea Society (V11OMBATS), the Big Island Mountain Bike Association (BIMBA), the Friends of Ainahou Ranch and PATH. She also is a former teacher with the Department of Education. Ms. Irvine states that she is not affiliated with any political party. All terms expire December, 2004.
