Statement Opposing Nuclear Irradiation of Agricultural & Other Products
Dear Mayor Yamashiro, County Council Members 6t Planning Commission:
I am a kama'aina resident, registered voter and businesswoman.
I have spent over 30 years in the world economic community, first as a manager in
two of the largest multi-national oil companies and banks, and now as a private
entrepreneur. I spend a large portion of my time exploring and analyzing market
trends and global markets. I also have a deep moral commitment to the economic
and environmental future of our Big Island, our rich cultural heritage, all our
ep
ople and our future generations.
Recent public opinion polls on the Mainland confirm that over 80% of the
American public will not buy irradiated food. That same percentage want full
disclosure and labeling of irradiated food products. Europe has widely rejected
irradiated food & other toxic technologies, and has already banned our beef and
meat products. They are constantly strengthening consumer & environmental laws.
Enlightened countries & communities around the world are also actively positioning
themselves for the emerging multi-million dollar eco-tourism marlret by:
* Declaring themselves anuclear-free zone and toxic free environment.
* Creating and enforcing city, suburban & ag open space land use laws.
* Expanding and protecting the most precious asset: pristine coastline.
* Supporting sustainable, small local organic farms that offer healthy food
& culturally "alive" friendly farmers markets plus beautiful green space.
* Offering government financial help and start-up assistance to economcially
and environmentally beneficial "green" technologies and local businesses.
* Focusing on community-based agro-eco villages with bed & breakfast
cultural emergence facillities rather than more empty corporate hotels.
Protect our greatest asset: Our "local color' and HEALTHY aloha spirit. It is time
to say "NO!" Not just to irradiation of our food, but to all outworn practices &
potentially dangerous technologies: These practices are being wisely rejected by
awake & aware nations around the world and currently imposed on uninformed &
economically desperate third world countires. Let us not be called the Third World
Island that was caught sleeping our uture economy can't afford it!
Respectfully on Behalf of Our Shared Big Island Future,
Jerri Ann Ross 84-5175 Painted Church Road, Honaunau, HI 96726-0415 -
