The Kona Gaffes Council has asked the Hawaii County Council to endorse our Policy on Genetically
Nlodif ed Coffee.
Kona coffee is recognized as one of the world's two best coffees -introduction of GM plants will corrupt
our heirloom stock, and make it no longer the gourmet product that people have come to expect. Not only
could it debase the flavor and quality of our coffee, but would also make it unmarketable in many areas of
the world, GM foods are already unaccepted in Japan and as Americans become more aware of the
untested safety aspects and the absence of any labeling requirement for GM foods, many will reject them
also.
We ask tlae Hawaii County Council to impose a moratorium on the release of genetically mod~ed coffee
plants into the Kona regions until a regulatory regime has been adopted that includes extensive evaluation

Modified Coffee.
Kona coffee is recognised as one of the world`s two best coffees -introduction of GM plants will corrupt
our heirloom stock, and make it no longer the gourmet product that people have come to expect. Not only
could it debase the flavor and quality of our coffee, but would also make it unmarketable in many areas of
