I urge y®u t® approve this important r'es®tution.
The resolution wilt help protect the mono ~®ffee
Industry and the Pe®pte who drink Kona coffee.
Usually GPI crops are developed in response to either
grower needs or market needs. °The coffee G seep to be
.supporting a h~sndfat of researchers wh® developed the crop
with n® input frog the farmers or the market. the €~ain
oppositi®n to this res®tution is coning fror~ the papaya
industry concerns that a ban ~n GIB c®ffee wilt affect
there sates position . I~nfortunatety, •the reverse is also
true, the c®ffee sates p®sitic~n wilt be negatively
affected by the papaya industries interference with the
purity of K®na Coffee.
Pr~c~tection ®f K®na C®ffee wilt pr®tect the livelihood
®f over ~ fans and many related jobs . 1`his ~°esotution
should n®t affect papaya sales any m®re than the Mexican
~®vernment's t®tat ban on GMO corn or the moratoriums on
G pr~du~ts established by FU countries. ~t will protect
Kona Coffee.
GNP crops are not permitted by Federal taw in
certified organic cr®ps. If any G coffee plants are
br®ught t® Kona, ALL organic coffee watt re-quire
expensive testing to pr~®ve the beans are not
c®ntainate ~t is likely that the promising ®rganic
c®ffee ~aarket wilt fall. Eventually, alt the coffee in
K®na utd b~ a®nt®~sina~ted si,~ce p®ttinatt®~ is done by
bees.
